Though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened across the US with a similar box office haul to Guardians of the Galaxy, many chose to frame this as some kind of failure, or at least disappointment. It would seem that Sony Pictures are thinking along somewhat similar lines themselves, as they recently put their plans for future Spider-Man films back up on the whiteboard for adjustments, moving around dates and adding new tangents.
The studio appears to be very committed to long-standing plans for the next film in the series, however, with Drew Goddard hard at work on a villain-centric spinoff, The Sinister Six. That film is likely to go into production early next year for release, in the US at least, on November 11th 2016.
That’s a ways off, of course, but I guess it’s never too early to whoop up some excitement, and so Sony are already onto their second major promotion for the picture.
The first, you may recall, was a tie-in with mobile app Shazam that delivered teaser images to audience members phones during the end credits of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now there’s a special, Target stores only edition of that movie’s DVD which comes with an extra disc, designed to promote The Sinister Six – and, of course, shift more copies of Amazing 2 in the meantime.
This trailer reveals something of what they’ve put on the extra DVD.
Did you spot the image of a head in a jar? That was going to feature in a post-credits tag for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which, for some reason, was cut from release prints. I know it’s real, though, because I’ve seen it with my own two eyes.
Judging from the original tease, the movie Six line-up would see Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Rhino, Vulture, Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio, or perhaps the Chameleon, coming together. The above video seemed to be teasing a different line-up, though I expect they were more concerned with which villains they had footage of in the studio vault.
And where is Black Cat in all of this? Sony and Marc Webb cast Felicity Jones in Amazing Spider-Man 2 as a character called Felicia, as in Ms. Hardy, the Black Cat’s alias. We at Film Divider were expecting that she was going to be a part of The Sinister Six – in fact, we thought she’d most likely be the heroine of that movie, the bad girl who goes good.
Maybe that’s actually the case – or maybe it’s the case and then, also, the Six will recruit a replacement villain to keep that all-important number up. Perhaps Jones won’t be back at all until Amazing Spider-Man 3; perhaps she’s been written out of the picture altogether.
Or maybe Sony have much bigger plans for the character.
Another film on the studio’s docket is a largely mysterious picture for 2017 that Deadline first reported on, and called “a female superhero movie.” Lisa Joy is currently working on a script. And this could well be a Black Cat story.
Or Silver Sable. Or Firestar. Or Spider-Woman. Or I don’t know who else.
I know this discussion has warped into a collection of “maybe” and “perhaps” lists. Nothing here is too sure, everything seems to be up in the air.
But even still, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sony start teasing this mysterious picture soon, not the way they’re going to town on The Sinister Six.
